Saguaro seeds are small and short-lived. Although they germinate easily, predation and lack of moisture prevent all but about 1% of seeds from successful germination. Seeds must wait 12–14 months before germination; lack of water during this period drastically reduces seedling survival. The existence of nurse plants is critical to seedling establishment.
Research on saguaros over the past century has revealed much about the plant’s growth, reproduction, populations. Saguaro National Park was established (1933) and expanded (1995) to “preserve the exceptional growth thereon of various species of cacti and the prime Sonoran desert habitat that the saguaro lives in.

In late April through early June, the tops of the saguaro’s trunk and arms sprout a profusion of large, creamy white flowers. Individual flowers open at night and close the following afternoon. To develop into fruits, they must be pollinated within this time frame. Pollination is carried demodé by nectar feeding bats, birds and insects. Each fruit contains about 2,000 to 3,500 tiny black seeds. When the fruit and seeds are eaten by a coyote or cactus wren, the seeds pass through their digestive system unharmed and are distributed throughout the desert.
Saguaros growing up to 5,000 feet in elevation are usually found on south-facing slopes where freezing temperatures are less likely to occur or are shorter in duration.
